Nutrishift

Nudging consumers to shift their eating behaviors to realize the need for better eating and nutrition.

Project Overview

The primary goal for this project is to teach and entice people to make healthier food choices. I also want to show people of all ages that there are different pros and cons to all foods and supplements. This involves developing a solution that does not constrain people into a box diet of specific foods and using nutrition as the main foundation to help people optimize their health as well as their fitness.

Research

Research started with interviewing a couple of the university's nutrition and health professors. It was an unquestionable choice as my main target audience were young adults aging from 20 to 30 years old. Also during the research process, I signed up for a health and wellness fair at the university. I brought a bunch of food and did a participation booth where they would choose between two similar food choices. I recorded their actions and also did a quick survey after they participated. Additional surveys and literature research was also conducted.

Personas

Personas were created from the user research to key in various types of potential users. The personas were also used to create user journey maps to help map out pain points during an experience.

Olivia

22 years old, Graduate with Busy Schedule
Olivia is a new graduate and is currently working a full time job. She frequently works out and tries to eat healthy whenever possible. She has always wanted to eat healthier, but was unable to due to her busy school life. Now she has some free time to work on her nutrition. She is also low on calcium and iron so she tries to hit her daily values. Nutrition is a big factor when she is shopping for food, however, price is also another influence on how she decides what to buy and eat.

Luke

25 years old, Strength Training Beginner
Luke has always dabbled in strength training, however, he has become more serious about his fitness recently. He is now on a strength training program and knows diet is a key part of his progress. He is still learning the basics and has received help from his workout buddies. He also tries to track his calorie intake with the app Myfitnesspal.

Ideations

The ideation and visualization of the project began with giving the project some personality and branding guidelines. From the compiled research, I already had an unpolished concept of how I wanted everything laid out. Essentially it was to influence people to shift or change their choices.

Logo Development

The pill shapes that the form the strokes of the uppercase N represent health.

The two circles represent items that are connected being shifted around and substituted based on personal preference.

The logotype share the same roundness as the symbol which is used to ease the user into feeling comfortable as opposed to using a sharper typeface. The shared boldness is used to easily capture the audience’s attention.

Typography and Color

Arial Rounded Bold was chosen as the heading font due to its curvy and friendly nature. I wanted the overall product to convey wholesomeness and healthiness.

Din was the main font for copy text. It is easy on the eyes and legible even at smaller sizes. Surprisingly it pairs well visually with Arial Rounded Bold.

Universally, when humans look at greens and blues they think of health, eating healthy and clean.

Solution

The purpose of Nutrishift is to give people healthier options of foods in their daily diet. It provides users with two methods of choosing alternative foods.

Many people go to their phones to look up and compare products that they are uncertain of purchasing. The decision of creating and designing a mobile application, such as Nutrishift, was to help users easily compare and choose the exact foods that they need in their diets.

Ultimately, users would accumulate enough nutritional knowledge where they will no longer need the assistance of Nutrishift. The overarching goal of this application is to spread of using this application is to spread awareness of good nutrition.

nutrishift-spectrometer

Smart Food

Spectroscopy is the term used to refer to the measurement of radiation intensity as a function of wavelength. Spectrometers are devices that measures and analyzes spectrums. There are many devices that are currently being made by companies, such as TellSpec and SCiO, that use spectrometers to analyze food. The spectrometers that are used in these products have to be connected to users’ phones to be fully effective. However, current spectrometers are still too big and reducing their sizes will result in inaccurate analysis.

In the near future, spectrometers will definitely be reduced in size while retaining the same scanning qualities. Hypothetically, Nutrishift will use a spectrometer that is incorporated into the user’s phone.

Substitution

Nutrishift is always ready to scan whatever you are eating. From the home screen, you are able to look up your favorite foods as well as look at suggestions, which are based on your preferences and progress. Using the phone’s spectrometer would be the easiest method of analyzing your food, however, if the food is not in the database, you can also scan the UPC barcode found on most food products in the store.

Spectrometer

After you scan your food, you will get a couple of options to set how many substitutes you want shown. After your substitutes are displayed you can filter them based on healthiness, price tag, or taste preference. On the substitute screen you can quickly compare each food as well as select the ones you want for further inspection. Going to the compare screen, you can see how the nutrients affect your set goals.

Meal Planning

Shortly after making your decision, you will have two options: finding where to buy the food, or to eat and track your food. You can view your goals which automatically change when you add and track a food. You can also get further detail by viewing the analysis done on one goal at a time.

The meal plan feature will automatically give you options of foods it thinks you need. You choose the food you want from the recommendations and it creates a grocery list based on recipes the user can select from.
