VivaLNK Tappi

Peace of Mind with Continuous Fever Monitoring

Project Overview

Tappi was a wearable product with a companion phone application. I was involved with product, packaging, and interface design. The primary function of the application was to sync with the wearable product, Tappi, to help parents monitor their child's temperature and health. Tappi would continuously monitor the body temperature even during sleep. Users can set temperature thresholds, and be notified on their phones when the temperature reaches a certain point. Parents and caregivers can also monitor remotely from another device.

Tappi Wearable

The wearable device was an adhesive stick on pad that was initially NFC enabled. At first they were only compatible with Android mobile devices. Eventually bluetooth enabled versions were put into production. I was involved with a small part of each of the product's design. The first project started with the design and illustration of the device.

Illustration

I was handed the blueprints for the wearable device and was tasked with coming up with illustrations based of the dimensions in the blueprint. The project manager also wanted the designs of the illustrations to potentially become a sort of mascot for the product as well. As for the name of the product, they decided on Tappi as tapping the phone against the device was the main method of measuring temperature. It was also friendly and cute.

Tappi the Mascot

The wires and sensors that enabled NFC for this specific device contained two prominent circles. It was decided some type of animal with two big ears would best fit the design.

We ended up choosing a brown bear. It played on the aspects and personality of a stuffed toy teddy bear. As children were an essential part of the target audience, the teddy bear represented friendliness and comfort.

The bear design was narrowed down to a few options. Eventually, we agreed upon using two different styles for the bear design. One simplistic bear design for the product and mobile application and another more illustrative design for the mascot.

Mobile Application

The mobile application helped the user visualize and keep track of the measurements. Wireframes and concepts for features were already discussed and decided upon when I joined the project. My role for the app was to look at and make sense of the entire experience. As for the user interface, I was tasked at making the app inviting and family friendly. While working on the product, the company and upper management wanted the MVP (most viable product) to be released as soon as possible.

Userflows

Below are a couple of very early userflows for some of the features. I worked with a project manager and another developer and gradually refined each user flow and feature.

Onboarding

To use the mobile application with their purchased Tappi Thermometer, users were required to create an account. The onboarding process allowed the users to create login information, pair their devices as well as creating multiple users.

Monitoring

The main landing page and home screen was simple and clean. The users had two options, selecting a user and measuring temperature. There was also a toggle to quickly switch back and forth between Fahrenheit and Celsius. In the hamburger menu, users could navigate to history, settings, and account information.

History and Tracking

The history of each user could be viewed at two levels, monthly or hourly. At a month view, users would be shown the most severe temperature for each day of the month. Clicking on a specific day would go into a more detailed view of that day showing every instance temperature was "tapped" or synced.

Thresholds Settings

Another experience that was heavily emphasized and worked on was allowing the user to set temperature thresholds. Users would be notified in app and through their notification panel based on their threshold settings.
